Fouling Prediction in Reverse Osmosis Processes

چکیده
In recent years, membrane separation processes have successfully established footholds in all areas of chemical separations. Semipermeable membranes are now enhancing and even replacing long-time standard techniques such as distillation and solvent extraction (1). They are also being used in the preparation of purified chemical and biological products as well as the treatment and recovery of many industrial waste streams (2, 3). Many of these recent technological advances follow from successful research begun in the 1950's to desalinate seawater using synthetic membranes in reverse osmosis processes. While other methods to desalinate seawater have proven too unreliable or too expensive, the use of reverse osmosis in the production of potable water has steadily increased (4). Despite its growing popularity and improved technology, reverse osmosis, RO, along with all membrane separation processes continues to be plagued with one persistent problem. The problem is membrane fouling (5). Eyecamp has defined this broad term as the following:

Investigation of the Effect of Copolymer Antiscalant on TDS Removal Efficiency in Reverse Osmosis Membrane
Background & objectives: Nowadays, according to membrane-based filtration processes; the use of substances such as antiscalants that prevents the formation of deposits during the treatment process, is very important from industrial point of view. This study aimed to synthesize styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (PSMA) using the radical polymerization method and to investigate the factors and pa...
متن کاملAn Overview of Fouling Mechanisms, Prediction and Mitigation Strategies for Thermal Desalination Plants
Despite technological advances of several desalination processes such as reverse osmosis, still considerable proportion of installed units are thermally driven processes which their efficiency can severely be reduced by the formation of fouling deposits on heat transfer surfaces. For many years, it has been practical strategy to avoid fouling rather than facing it. Some of these strategies are ...
متن کاملMechanisms Involved in Osmotic Backwashing of Fouled Forward Osmosis (FO) Membranes
Organic matter leads to one of the biggest problems in membranes: fouling. Developing efficient cleaning processes is therefore crucial. This study systematically examines how alginic acid fouling formed under different physical and chemical conditions affect osmotic backwashing cleaning efficiency in forward osmosis (FO). The fouling layer thickness before and after osmotic backwashing was mea...
متن کاملForward Osmosis as a Pre-treatment to Reverse Osmosis
This paper presents some aspects of forward osmosis coupled with reverse osmosis using a recirculating draw solution, to produce desalinated water or for dewatering/concentrating a feed stream, with some data provided from a number of operational sites. Many of these aspects are applicable to other osmotic processes and provide an insight into where they may be appropriately considered. A compa...
متن کاملA Short Review of Membrane Fouling in Forward Osmosis Processes
Interest in forward osmosis (FO) research has rapidly increased in the last decade due to problems of water and energy scarcity. FO processes have been used in many applications, including wastewater reclamation, desalination, energy production, fertigation, and food and pharmaceutical processing. However, the inherent disadvantages of FO, such as lower permeate water flux compared to pressure ...
